Abstract: This thesis deals with the traditional theatre structures, Koothambalams located in Kerala. Koothambalams were spaces which were dedicated for the performance of ancient sacred Sanskrit theatre, Koodiyattam. It was constructed within the panchaprakara layout of the temple complex. The second century treatise, Natyasastra authored by Bharata Muni provides the base for its design principles. There are only thirteen such structures remaining in Kerala. The thesis involves a detailed study of Koodiyattom, evolution of Koothambalam, its architecture and contribution of various treatises which helped in evolving and constructing them within temple complexes. The prime objective is to understand the challenges and issues faced by these structures. Site visits to many of the Koothambalams in Kerala gave an understanding about its present day scenario. The thesis concludes by offering suggestions to protect and revitalise the Koothambalams as well as provide guidelines to construct similar spaces outside the temple complex.
