Abstract: Because of the rapid growth in the towns and cities the urban open spaces are getting deteriorated . if we look the Indian cities many lack open spaces , according to urdpfi guidenes the city should have a recreational area of 20-25% of the total development area, who prescribed a standard of 9 sq.m green space per capita for cities. Our cities are dealing with the open space crisis.major cities like Chennai, banglore Trivandrum,Vijayawada Amritsar etc.. are dealing with the crisis but government and development agencies mostly exploited the real estate in the city. Vijayawada has 3.3% of recreational space according to masterplan 2021, with a few city level open space , almost all the open spaces in the city are dealing with deterioration , declined footfall and are slowly shrinki8ng while the redevelopment proposals by the government only intend to consume more of the left open spaces in the city, there is a need to preserve these spaces and protect the eco sensitive spaces such as park areas along the canals from development. My thesis aims to understand how these open spaces are perceived by the users and the current existing network and its functioning and work towards creating a better public realm by restructuring , protecting eco-sensitive borders ,utilising underdeveloped and unused space and turn the places into interactive spaces.
