Abstract: | Tourism, with its interconnected web of activities, operations, and processes, plays a vital role in shaping economies and communities. Odisha, a state renowned for its diverse tourism offerings – rural/tribal, cultural/heritage, religious, and eco-tourism – presents a unique opportunity for sustainable development. Notably, 22.43% of Odisha's population comprises 13 indigenous tribal communities. Ecotourism initiatives have emerged as a powerful tool for empowering these communities economically, while simultaneously fostering a deeper appreciation for their rich cultural heritage, including vibrant traditional dances. Recognizing the potential of tourism as a driver for rural development, particularly with nearly 74% of its population residing in villages, Odisha seeks to leverage this sector strategically. However, current approaches to rural tourism development often lack a comprehensive framework that effectively integrates crucial elements like community engagement, sustainable practices, and robust environmental management. To address this gap, this research aims to develop a holistic sustainable tourism planning framework specifically tailored for Odisha's context. This framework will prioritize responsible tourism practices and environmental management, ensuring long-term benefits for both communities and the environment. The research focuses on Mayurbhanj district, a region brimming with ecotourism potential. By concentrating on areas surrounding and within Mayurbhanj's designated ecotourism sites, the study will delve into a nuanced analysis of tourism's impact. This analysis will encompass a multi-faceted approach, examining the impact on both tribal communities and the environment. The well-being of these communities will be a central focus, with the research investigating how tourism development can contribute to their social and economic sustainability. Additionally, the study will identify internal and external factors influencing these communities, considering aspects like government policies, market forces, and potential cultural shifts. By comprehensively exploring the possibilities and obstacles of development in Mayurbhanj, the research aims to provide valuable insights that can inform the creation of a sustainable tourism plan for Odisha. Ultimately, the research aspires to contribute to a future where tourism empowers local communities, celebrates cultural heritage, and fosters a harmonious relationship between humans and nature within Odisha. |
