Abstract: Transport poverty refers to the inability of individuals or households to access transportation due to various factors related to transport infrastructure, settlement characteristics, and demographic factors. Informal settlements are particularly vulnerable to transport poverty due to their unique characteristics. This study aims to investigate the relationship between transport poverty and informal settlements by examining various parameters that contribute to transport poverty. Through a comprehensive methodology involving literature review, primary surveys, and research conducted in informal settlements in Bhopal, this study systematically analyses cases of transport poverty. The research begins by assessing the transport landscape of Bhopal and its informal settlements, followed by the selection of relevant settlements for in-depth study of transport poverty. Settlements were chosen based on population characteristics, demographics and locational factors. Transport poverty is then assessed using identified criteria such as affordability, accessibility, mobility, time and a composite matrix. Data analysis is conducted using statistical tools and techniques. Based on the findings, this study proposes comprehensive and inclusive transport policy recommendations aimed at mitigating the impact of transport poverty.
