Abstract: | This thesis project explores the design and implementation of a community housing model tailored to the unique needs of tea plantation workers in Munnar, Kerala. Focused on redevelopment, the project aims to provide residents with improved living conditions and enhanced livelihood opportunities through the provision of adequate facilities and amenities. Drawing on participatory approaches and sustainable design principles, the research investigates the socio-economic dynamics of the community, identifies key challenges, and proposes innovative housing solutions to address them. To achieve the objectives of this thesis, the project will begin with a comprehensive assessment of the current living conditions and socio-economic status of the tea plantation workers in Munnar. This will involve conducting surveys, interviews with residents to gather firsthand insights into their daily lives, needs, and aspirations. The data collected will be analysed to identify key challenges such as inadequate housing, limited access to basic services, and economic vulnerabilities. Using this information, the project will employ participatory design methods, involving the community in the planning and decision-making processes. This approach will not only foster a sense of ownership among residents but also ensure that the housing solutions are culturally appropriate and aligned with the community's needs. Sustainable design principles will be a cornerstone of the redevelopment plan. The project will utilize locally available materials, such as laterite stone and clay tiles, to construct energy-efficient and environmentally friendly housing units. Additionally, green building technologies, such as rainwater harvesting systems, waste management solutions, will be integrated to enhance sustainability and reduce the ecological footprint of the development. The design will also incorporate community spaces that promote social interaction and cohesion, such as community centres, playgrounds, and gardens. Economic empowerment initiatives will be embedded within the housing model to enhance livelihood opportunities for residents. A skill development centre will be established to offer training programs in various trades and professions, enabling workers to diversify their income sources. By addressing both the physical and socio-economic aspects of housing, the project aims to create a self-sustaining community that can thrive in the long term. The holistic approach ensures that the redevelopment not only improves living conditions but also empowers residents economically and socially, fostering a resilient and prosperous community. Furthermore, the project will strive to maintain the cultural heritage of Munnar, integrating traditional architectural elements and preserving the natural landscape to create a harmonious living environment. |
