| dc.description.abstract | Palliative care is a holistic approach to healthcare that focuses not only on physical treatment but also on emotional, psychological, and spiritual well-being—especially for those with life-limiting illnesses. This thesis explores the potential of architecture to contribute meaningfully to palliative care by designing a facility that transcends the clinical model and integrates healing through nature, spatial inclusivity, and community awareness. The primary aim of this thesis is to design a palliative care center that supports holistic healing by incorporating nature-based strategies, ensuring accessibility for users of all physical and emotional capacities, and engaging families and communities in the process of care and healing. The project reimagines palliative care architecture not just as a space for end-of-life support, but as a nurturing environment where patients, caregivers, and families can find comfort, connection, and dignity. The objectives include studying the philosophy and needs of palliative care, understanding the deep connection between humans and their environment, and analyzing how natural elements—such as light, vegetation, water, and open space—can act as catalysts for emotional and physical healing. A core focus lies in building strong architectural relationships between patients, caregivers, families, and the natural and built environments. The facility will provide not only patient rooms and medical care units, but also family accommodations, sensory gardens, interactive communal areas, and spaces for respite and reflection. A key component is the integration of a research and training center that enables practical learning in cancer and palliative care, fostering knowledge exchange and continuous improvement in care delivery. The facility is designed to be located near a hospital for medical support, yet far enough from urban congestion to provide a serene, therapeutic atmosphere conducive to healing. Ultimately, the thesis envisions an eco-friendly, experiential, and inclusive palliative care model that honors the dignity of life through compassionate design. By addressing access, emotional support, and community engagement, this project seeks to redefine palliative care environments as spaces of life-affirming connection, not just places associated with illness or endings.
