Abstract: | Garden played an important role in the evolution of the city of Bhopal since the time of Nawabs. Preserving the Historical urban areas and traditional landscape is preserving and revival of architectural heritage or in one sense, preserving the culture. Traditional landscape are the most important for showing the past life style, the lack of recognition and appreciation of these on the part of authorities, and the public too, will gradually lead to their destruction and replacement by contemporary structures. Historic gardens have not received adequate attention from heritage conservationists in India although in the recent past there have been successful attempts to restore lost gardens such as Mahtab Bagh in Agra and temple gardens of Khajuraho. The report identifies one such garden called Bada bagh which is situated in the heart of old city of Bhopal whose existence is threatened by weathering and deterioration, lack of or poor maintenance, deliberate or unintentional vandalism. Steps must be taken to restore the lost value of the space by inducing the activities that responds to historical as well as present demand. The design proposal projects a vision for the site addressing major issues raised by the study. The design of the historical garden is conceptualized to reflect the importance of the garden by enhancing its historic character as well as making is usable for the community purposes. |
